Saginaw Spirit defenseman Ryan O’Connor and forward Michael Sgarbossa have been selected to Team Canada ’s roster for the World Under-18 Hockey Championship.
The games will be played in Belarus starting April 13.
O’Connor and Sgarbossa will join 13 other players from the Ontario Hockey League in representing their country in this prestigious event.
O’Connor posted 13 goals and 25 assists during the 2009-2010 regular season, including 11 goals and 15 assists in 46 regular season games with the Spirit. The Hamilton, Ont., native has earned 23 goals and 50 assists in two seasons split between the Spirit and the Barrie Colts. O’Connor, the OHL Defenseman of the Month for January, is eligible for the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
Sgarbossa tallied 20 goals and 32 assists during the 2009-2010 regular season, including 13 goals and 19 assists in 28 regular season games with the Spirit. In his two OHL seasons with the Spirit and Colts, the Guelph, Ont., has earned 30 goals and 65 assists. Sgarbossa was ranked the 183rd top North American skater eligible for the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by NHL Central Scouting in their 2010 mid-term rankings.
