Mike Looby scored with with 1:32 left in regulation to snap a 1-1 tie and lead the Plymouth Whalers past the Saginaw Spirit, 3-1, Wednesday night before 3,443 at the Dow Event Center in Saginaw.
The Plymouth victory – combined with Sault Ste. Marie’s 4-1 loss to Sarnia Wednesday night – moves the Whalers to within one point of Sault Ste. Marie in the tight OHL West Division race. Sault Ste. Marie leads the division with a record of 25-24-8-1.
Mike Knight and Dan Collins (empty-net) also scored for Plymouth. Daniel Borges scored the lone Saginaw goal, a power-play marker on Saginaw's first shot of the first period.
Plymouth (25-24-5-3) outshot Saginaw, 43-16, but ran into hot goaltending from Spirit overage goalie Jeff Weber, a former Whaler, who made 39 saves. Plymouth goalie Ryan Nie stopped 15 shots for the win.
Rookie goalie Ryan Daniels played 3:02 in the second period for Saginaw and stopped both shots he faced.
The Whalers host Windsor on Friday night while the Spirit hosts Kitchener Saturday night.
