Maybe last weekend was a reality check for the Saginaw Spirit.After losing in Peterborough Thursday night, the Spirit lost in Ottawa on Friday night and in Kingston Saturday night. Saginaw is now in third place in the OHL West after the Plymouth Whalers beat both London Friday and Barrie Saturday. Saginaw was in first place heading into the weekend.
The Ottawa game, a 4-1 loss, was marred by a brawl in the third period that saw Saginaw defenseman Scott Fletcher (pictured) leave the bench to jump Ottawa rookie Logan Couture. Elgin Reid then hopped the 67's bench to protect Couture and fight Fletcher. Suspensions await.
Jamie Klie scored Saginaw's lone goal and Francois Thuot stopped 35 shots for the Spirit.
Then Saturday night, captain Patrick McNeill, Michal Birner and Tom Pyatt scored in the 7-3 loss. Ryan Daniels finished with 39 saves.
Saginaw (27-25-1-0) heads to Sarnia on Friday to take on the Sting and then return home Saturday to face the second-place Windsor Spitfires.
