Anthony Ciraulo and Jason Simota scored third period goals for host Mahoning Valley on Saturday, sparking the Phantoms to a 4-3 win over Traverse City in a North American Hockey League North Division contest at The Ice Zone.
Owen Meyer gave Mahoning Valley (18-9-3) a 1-0 edge with the only goal of the first period before the visitors broke loose for a pair of scores in the second. The Stars (10-16-4) took a 2-1 lead in their return from a lengthy holiday break on tallies from defenseman Eric Elmblad (10:05) and forward Ryan Bond (18:04). Joe St. John and Jarrett Rush assisted on Elmblad’s first goal of the season, while Joe Scheiger and Jake Erway scored helpers on Bond’s first goal in a Traverse City sweater.
That lead was short-lived, however, as Milan Drevenak netted the equalizer with just :31 left in the second period, setting up the third period lamplighter from Ciraulo and Simota.
Schweiger (Josh Sorenson) pulled the North Stars to within one with :56 left in regulation, but they couldn’t complete the comeback with the extra attacker in the final minute.
Jeremy Kaleniecki worked the pipes for TC, stopping 44 shots, while Ryan Zapolski earned the win for the Phantoms with 34 saves in 37 chances.
The teams square off again on Sunday in a 3 p.m. matinee.
