The Saginaw Spirit battled back to take a road win in a shootout in Sudbury Friday night, 3-2, and then got shellacked Saturday night in Barrie by a 6-1 mark.
Captain Patrick McNeill had the game-winner as he scored the only goal in the shootout. Spirit goaltender Francois Thuot knocked away the final Sudbury attacker’s puck before he had a chance to shoot. The win was the Spirit's first trip to OT and shootout this season.
Jesse Gimblett gave Saginaw and early 1-0 lead before the Wolves scored two straight.
Then with Thuot pulled for an extra attacker late in the third period, McNeill fired a shot on net, where Chris Chappell got a rebound chance. Patrick Asselin picked up Chappell's rebound and put the game-tying goal away. Thuot returned to net for the remainder of the third period and the scoreless overtime period. He stopped 37 Sudbury shots.
Barrie downed the Spirit, 6-1, in Barrie Saturday night. Joe McCann (above right) stripped a Barrie defender and broke in to beat Colts' goalie Dan LaCosta for Saginaw's lone tally.
Thuot made 44 saves in the loss.
The Spirit resume action Friday night in Saginaw against the Sarnia Sting.
