Kalamazoo completes pair of trades

The Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings announced today the completion of two trades with member NAHL clubs.

Adding to their blue line, the Jr. K-Wings have acquired defenseman Chris Leone from the Wichita Falls Wildcats for future considerations. The veteran defenseman will be entering his third season in the NAHL, with both of his previous campaigns occurring with the Wildcats.

Last season, Leone was one of three members of the Wildcats selected to represent the South Division in the NAHL Top Prospects Tournament.

"Adding a veteran defenseman of Chris' caliber certainly enhances our roster,” said Kalamazoo coach-GM Marc Fakler. “He is a reliable defender that makes good decisions, will provide valuable leadership to our team and also has the ability to be an asset on the power play."

Leone recorded 27 points (17 goals, 20 assists) in 102 games over the last two seasons for the Wildcats.

A native of Dearborn Heights, Leone will have family nearby, as his older brother, Mike Leone, is a forward for Western Michigan University.

In a separate transaction for future considerations, the Jr. K-Wings have completed a trade with the Michigan Warriors for forward Nick Kovalchik.

"Nick skates extremely well and possesses good hockey sense and championship experience," said Fakler. “He showed a great scoring touch last season and as a result one of the top goal scorers in the state.”

A First Team All-State Selection last season with Wyandotte Roosevelt High School, Kovalchik was second on his team in goals scored with 41 and lead Wyandotte to the school's first ever state championship.
