The Soo Indians will be presented with the Carmen Provenzano Memorial Cup prior to their Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League game with the crossriver Soo Thunderbirds this Saturday at 7 p.m. at Pullar Stadium.
Having already won five of their seven games from the Thunderbirds prior to Saturday's regular-season finale between the two teams, the Indians have thus clinched the Provenzano Cup for this season.
The Provenzano Cup was initiated prior to the start of the 2006-07 season in memory of Carmen Provenzano, a former Sault, Ontario politician who passed away in July 2006 from a heart attack.
The first Provenzano Cup regular-season series was between the Soo Thunderbirds and the Blind River Beavers and was won by the T-Birds. The format was changed at the start of this season to make the Provenzano Cup a regular-season series between the Twin Soo teams.
Prior to the start of Saturday's game at the Pullar, the Provenzano Cup will be presented to Indians' captain Isaac Viau by Mary Desimone Russon, niece of the late former politician.
Admission to Saturday's game at the Pullar is $5.
