The Soo Indians ended the month of January on a winning note to remain in second place in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League with 48 points, just two points back of the pacesetting Sudbury Kal Tire Jr. Wolves.
Wednesday at Big Bear Arena, the Indians cooled off the Blind River Beavers, 5-2. Scott Pulak had a pair of goals and Nick Zilka, Mike Connolly and Ky Moje also scored for the Indians, who halted a two-game losing streak.
The Indians led 1-0 after the first period and 4-0 after the second. Pulak clinched the game with an empty net goal late in the third after Jon Drake and Anthony Libonati had scored for Blind River.
Brennan Poderzay made 29 saves for the Indians, who now have a 6-4 record since Kevin Cain took over as head coach, including 3-0 on home ice.
"We played okay, not great, but well enough to win," Cain said evenly. "We've got some things to work on."
The Indians don't play again until Feb. 7 when they play the crossiver Soo Thunderbirds at John Rhodes Community Centre in the Canadian Sault.
